GAR Foundation Supports K-12 Classroom and Instructional Innovation with $299,841 Awarded

June 04, 2012

Akron, Ohio (June 4, 2012)—GAR Foundation’s Distribution Committee awarded $299,841 to 38 Summit County educator teams working in 14 schools through its Educator Initiative Grant (EIG) program. Award winners were recognized at a Foundation reception on June 4.

EIG offers grant awards of $1,000 to $15,000 to teams of Summit County K-12 educators who work together to develop, implement, and assess instructional strategies that demonstrate impact on student academic achievement.

Winning proposals will be implemented in the 2012-13 school year and include projects like the F1 in Schools Technology Challenge, a plan developed by Barberton High School teacher Bill Boyer and his team.  Through F1,students will design and manufacture CO2-powered model racing cars.  At Hillcrest Elementary in the Revere Local School District, Suzanne Pearcy and her team will be implementing a school-wide R Leaders leadership program which will incorporate concepts from Steven Covey’s influential book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People

“The EIG program provides a unique opportunity to support creative and collaborative teaching models on the “front lines” of education, where teacher and student interact,” said Christine Mayer, president of GAR Foundation.  “We have seen the positive impact past EIG winners have had on their students, and we look forward to more successes with this year’s award winners.”

GAR funded 38 proposals out of 65 received this past spring. Twelve public school districts and two private schools were among the award winners.  Winning projects will be showcased at GAR’s annual fall EIG conference later this year.
