Akron Children's Museum Award "Best Community Partnership Award" by the Ohio Museums Association
Akron Children's Museum - "Explore Galore with Monsters and More!"
Akron Children’s Museum’s Kindergarten Essential Experiences℠ program, "Explore Galore with Monsters and More!" is part of the broader Essential Experiences℠ initiative—a citywide collaboration that ensures every elementary student in the Akron Public Schools system receives a robust, co-curricular learning experience connected directly to classroom instruction. Essential Experiences℠ was developed to provide guaranteed access to high-quality field-based learning, regardless of school, neighborhood, or family resources. Through this initiative, over 9,000 PreK through 5th grade scholars each year visit one of seven Greater Akron arts and culture organizations.
Akron Children’s Museum joined Essential Experiences℠ in Phase 2 and became the host site for kindergarten scholars. The experience was designed by the Akron Children’s Museum’s education team in partnership with the Akron Public Schools’ Learning Specialists and educators. Each Essential Experiences℠ includes clear learning objectives tied to teacher lesson plans, connections to Ohio Learning Standards, and pre-visit and post-visit learning activities that extend classroom instruction. Experiences also incorporate age-appropriate college and career connections, reinforcing that learning happens beyond the classroom and that Akron’s cultural institutions are part of a scholar’s educational ecosystem.
For kindergarten students, "Explore Galore with Monsters and More!" emphasizes foundational learning skills such as observation, communication, problem-solving, early STEM thinking, and social-emotional growth. The museum setting encourages students to ask questions, explore materials, collaborate with peers, and build confidence as learners. The program intentionally supports the Akron Public School System’s Portrait of a Scholar by promoting curiosity, creativity, persistence, and meaningful engagement with real-world environments.
Across the district, Essential Experiences℠ has dramatically increased access to cultural institutions and learning resources. More Akron Public School students than ever engage with Akron’s arts, culture, and educational assets and, as Essential Experiences has expanded and strengthened, Akron Public Schools has also seen an increase in its overall graduation rate. The Essential Experiences initiative demonstrates that when schools, funders, and cultural organizations work together with shared goals and accountability, the result is not simply a series of field trips—it is a sustainable, citywide learning ecosystem.
OMA Award Spotlight - Akron Children's Museum
On Sunday, April 19, the Ohio Museums Association held our Annual Awards dinner to recognize the winners of our 2025 Awards of Achievement and 2025 Visual Communication Awards, in conjunction with the 2026 Annual Conference in Columbus.
During the ceremony, OMA celebrated the outstanding achievement of Ohio museums in Visual Communications, individual and institutional achievement, and the tireless work museum professionals undertake to help to advance Ohio’s museum community both locally, and on a national level.
OMA Award Spotlight - Awards of Achievement
The Awards of Achievement are presented to reflect the outstanding quality and caliber of work by Ohio museums and their professionals in two categories: Institutional Achievement Awards and Individual Achievement Awards.
Nominations for these awards are incredibly detailed. This in-depth process helps to illustrate how these institutions and individuals have gone “above and beyond” the normal call of duty to support their institution, serve their public and advance the cause of the museum community.
Each year, the review panel is overwhelmed by the outstanding projects, innovative programming and dedication to our field as exhibited in each of the institutional and individual nominations. Congratulations again to each of our award winners.
